When Mabel Marie Cantrell was born on January 20, 1921, in the Liberty community of Granville, Jackson County, Tennessee, her father, John, was 43, and her mother, Gorda, was 29. She attended Liberty School, graduating 8th grade before the family moved in January 1938 to a farm just north of Cookeville, Putnam, Tennessee, . During WWII she moved to Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, where she was a Rosie. One of her jobs there was sewing parachutes for the war effort. After the war she returned to Cookeville, taking a job at the shirt factory. There she met Estelle Cowan who introduced her to her twin brother, Odell. Mabel married Odell Cowan on July 20, 1947, in Putnam County, Tennessee. They traveled by bus to honeymoon in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. They had two children during their marriage. She died on July 15, 2004, in Franklin, Williamson, Tennessee, at the age of 83, and was buried in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee beside her husband.
