William died from old age 1 December 1909 in Mayfield township. WILLIAM A NICKERSON, 98 years old, died at the home of his son, George G Nickerson, in Mayfield township at 9 o'clock this morning, his death being due to old age. Mr. Nickerson came to Mayfield township 46 years ago and with the exception of two years that he spent in the village of Kingsley, had lived there continuously. He was one of the best known pioneers of the county and possibly the oldest resident.

William A. Nickerson was born March 20, 1812 in Cayuga, New York, where he lived until he moved to DeKalb County, IL. with his family. Mr. Nickerson was an abolitionist in sympathy and it was there that he became connected with the famous "underground railway" by which runaway slaves were sent on to Canada. Mr. Nickerson, with the help of his son, George, conducted a station and often cared for from 12 to 15 blacks in a night, sending them on the next station. Frequently his son would transport the negroes.

In 1862 George Nickerson moved to Mayfield Twp. and one year later, the father and mother came north. In 1901, the mother passed away at the age of 87 years, and was buried in the cemetery of Kingsley. Friday, her husband will be laid by her side, the funeral occurring at 1 o'clock Friday, in Kingsley. Mr. Nickerson never sought political office, in fact, he always avoided it, but against his wishes, he was once elected a member of the board of supervisors being the first supervisor from Paradise township. He never would accept any other office and served but the one term. He was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church.*

In politics, he was a republican with prohibition tendencies. He was a Fremont voter and voted for every republican president including Grant when he became a prohibitionist, but cast one ballot for Bryan.

Mr. Nickerson had been ailing for some time, making his home with his sone George for a number of years. Yesterday morning he arose at his usual hour but complained of a sharp pain the region of his heart. He appeared to grow better as the day advanced and last night retired feeling about as usual. This morning when the son arose around 5 o'clock he heard his father up in his room. The aged man evidently laid down again and died without awakening. The discovery was made at 8 o'clock by the house keeper and the son arrived in the room just as the father was breathing his last.

Besides the son, George G. there are two other sons, Mulford and Dewey of Calif; 18 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild who survive him. Recently a picture of the five generations was taken, which was published in the Record, today, it little being thought that the picture would be used in the account of the death of the oldest member of the family group.
