Walker County Messenger
October 2, 1925
Rev. J.M. Coley passed away Wednesday morning at 3:40 o'clock following a lingering illness. He was 83 years old.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons and three daughters, as follows; Harry Coley, of San Francisco, Cal; Ed Coley, of Chickamauga; Mrs. F.E. Hall, of Chattanooga; Mrs. J.N. Alexander, of Trion; Mrs. T.A. Mashburn, of Summerville, Ga.; and Mrs. R.W.C. Myers, of Waterville.
The deceased was born on August 8, 1942 in Cass County, now Bartow County, Georgia. His father came from Ireland when a young man and landed at Savannah. After one year, the family moved to Cassville. Bro. Coley grew up on the farm in Cass County and at the outbreak of the Civil War went to the front and served during the war period. After the war, he resided in Chattanooga, where he married. In 1867, he joined the Odd Fellows and in 1870 was made a Master Mason. Later he also became a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Order of Red Men. In 1871, he was ordained as a Baptist Minister and remained true to his calling until early Wednesday morning. After being ordained as a minister he removed to Chattooga County and since 1887 his ministry extended over Walker and Chattooga Counties.
In his younger days, Mr. Coley traveled over the West, and later attended Mercer University, when the school was then situated at Penfield.
During his long service as minister and citizen of this county, he made and held a large host of friends, and was widely known throughout this section. The multitude of homes he touched, as well as the friendships he made, will make for him a shrine of perpetual memory.
For many years he was a contributor to the columns of the Messenger, and his communications were always read with interest.
An ardent believer in fraternal life, the later years he devoted his energy, time and interest in unstinted measure to the practice of the arts of Odd Fellowship and Free Masonry. He was a member of the local orders at the time of his demise, and his fraternal brethren will have charge of the burial rites.
Funeral services will be held this morning, Thursday, at 10 o'clock from the First Baptist church of LaFayette conducted by Rev. L.B. Arvin, assisted by Dr. J.P. Anderson and Revs C.F. Hughes and B.H. Howard. Interment will be in the LaFayette Cemetery. The services at the grave will be in charge of the Odd Fellows and Masonic fraternities, of which the deceased was a loyal member. Funeral arrangements will be in charge of the LaFayette Furniture Company.
In the death of Bro. Coley the county has lost a sterling citizen, the church a faithful minister, the family a devoted husband and father. His passing is deeply mourned by all who had come into his friendship.
