John Robert Chandler, 76, Dallas, died suddenly at 4 p.m. Thursday on East Corsicana Street here in Athens while endeavoring to fix a flat on his car.
He was enroute to his home in Dallas at the time, following a visit with Edward Whitesides of Frankston, a nephew.
Coroner S.A. Carroll of Athens said Chandler, driving alone, had stopped his automobile at the side of the road to change a flat tire. As he jacked up the vehicle to make the change, he collapsed with a heart attack.
He was dead a few moments after help arrived at the scene. Officers from the County Sheriffs Department called the County Health Officer, Dr. R.E. Henderson, to the scene, Carroll related, but the man was already dead before he arrived.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday from the Weiland-Merritt Chapel in Dallas, with burial in Restland Memorial Park.
Survivors include his widow; two step-daughters, Mrs. Maxine Brown of Morgan, Texas and Miss Pauline Payne of Dallas; one brother, Sam Chandler of Arkansas; five sisters, Mrs. Sadie Lazzell, Linwood, Utah, Mrs. Carrie Stephenson, Houston, Mrs. Ada McMurrough, Springer, New Mexico, Mrs. Hattie Campbell, Corpus Christi and Miss Gussie Chandler.
A Mason, Mr. Chandler was a pioneer member of Pentagon Lodge No. 1080 in Dallas. He was a retired contractor.
Hassell-Foster funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
