William McGowan gave his sons and daughters such advantages of liberal education as his limited means would afford. Three of his sons finished their education at the South Carolina College where they were graduated with distinction. Two of his sons, William McGowan, Jr., and John Jackson, became farmers and lived in the community of Cross Hill. Two of his sons, John and Samuel, served as soldiers in the United States Army in the wars against the Seminole Indians and Mexico, respectively, in 1836 and 1846.
