We are truly saddened by the passing of our loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Audrey MacKay Allen, 88, on December 5, 2011 at the Lincoln Court Retirement Community.
The descendant of an early pioneer family , Audrey was born on August 8, 1923 in Sugar City, Idaho, the daughter of Ernest Graham MacKay and Fannie Elizabeth Stoddard MacKay. She grew up in Sugar City and as a young girl loved to read, ice skate, and swim. Early education was obtained in Sugar City and, after the family moved to Idaho Falls, Audrey graduated from Idaho Falls High School. She continued her education at Henager Business College in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her training as a stenographer and secretary was a great foundation, which enriched her adult life.
She recognized the need for clerical personnel and volunteered to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. Audrey was proud of her service as a WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Service). The majority of her two and a half years in the Navy was spent in Seattle, Washington as a stenographer for the Naval Intelligence Department.
On June 24, 1947, she married Rial C. Allen in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Eight years later in June of 1955, a two-week-old baby girl, Robyn, joined their family. Three years later, two sisters, Ramona and Catherine – ages seven and eight – came along to complete the family unit. Audrey was a devoted mother and a homemaker. She lived and taught the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and was a woman of great compassion, integrity, honor, and respect.
Over their 43 plus years of marriage, the family witnessed how very deeply Audrey cared for her husband, Rial. They always consulted with each other and supported one another. They enjoyed being together, whether it was visiting the temple, going fishing, cutting wood, camping, or traveling. Rial passed away in January of 1991 and Audrey lovingly cared for him at home to the end.
Audrey lived most of her married life in Idaho Falls. She worked for the Farmers Home Administration and then for the Soil Conservation Service in Idaho Falls. When the government closed the area office in Idaho Falls, she was offered a job in Pocatello. She commuted each day and was a dedicated employee. When her husband's job required a move to Soda Springs in 1979, Audrey commuted daily from Soda Springs to Pocatello. During this time, they were influential in helping to raised their two grandchildren, Jeff and Jenny. Audrey retired after working for 40 years for the government, which included her 2 and a half years in the Navy. After her retirement, they moved back to Idaho Falls once again.
Audrey was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a great leader, possessing executive and organization abilities. These qualities were demonstrated in the many leadership positions she held. Some of her callings included: teacher, secretary, and president of the M.I.A.; secretary and president of the Relief Society; and secretary and first counselor in the Stake Relief Society Presidency. She also typing the Stake patriarchal blessings.
She was an avid reader, excellent cook. And enjoyed water aerobics, camping, bowling, and skiing. Audrey was gentle, unpretentious, and had an easy-going sense of humor – she wasn't afraid to laugh at herself. Her humility, dependability, and compassion have blessed our lives and she is a positive example for us to follow.
After her husband's death, Audrey spent many years alone. In those years, her true character never wavered. She never complained and was always gracious and grateful for everything done in her behalf. She lived her life with dignity and selflessness.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2011 at Wood Funeral Home (273 North Ridge Avenue) with Bishop Doug Hillman officiating. The family will visit with friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services on Friday. Interment will be in Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery.
