Born Beamsville, Ontario. Graduate Victoria College and University of Toronto (M.A. 1896; LL. D. 1927) Taught at Harvard, Radcliffe, University of Chicago, McGill University, Montreal.Chief Librarian Toronto Public Library from 1906 until death. Under his leadership, Toronto Public Library became one of Canada's outstanding library systems(from 5 to 16 branches, from 26 to 232 staff), inaugurating, among many other innovations, library services designed specifically for children (including their own branch - The Boys' and Girls' House, relocated in the 1990's and renamed the Lillian H. Smith branch, after it's first librarian.)Died at Wellesley Hospital, age 67.Buried in plot of father in law John T. Moore, founder of Moore Park.
