First president Canadian Bank of Commerce.Member of Legislative Council of Canada, 1862. After Canadian Confederation in 1867, became senator representing Ontario.Philanthrophist. Trustee of Toronto General Burying grounds from 1849 until death.Responsible for creation of McMaster University (first called Canadian Literary and Theological Institute and located Woodstock, Ontario. Now located in Hamilton, Ontario.) McMaster Hall (Bloor Street West, Toronto) and Jarvis Street Baptist ChurchBorn County Tyrone, Ireland. Immigrated at age 22 to New York City and to York(now Toronto)shortly afterward. Employed by, and became partner of, wholesale and retail merchant Robert Cathcart. Had his own wholesale dry-goods business ten years later. His sucessor after retirement from this business was nephew A. R. McMaster.Died at his residence on 34 Bloor Street East.1st wife Mary died 1869. 2nd wife, Susan Moulton McMaster died 1916 and is buried with her family in Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal.
