Michael Lewis Courtney was a Lt.Colonel in the U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War.

He served during the war at Woodburn, Tennessee and at the battles of Pulaski and Nashville. Because of gallant and meritorious services he was brevetted Captain and Major U.S.Army.

He was a Sir Knight Templar, a member of the Grand Army and a Knight Member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.

After the Civil War he studied at Columbia Law School and graduated with honor.

He later served 12 years in the Army in Texas and the remainder of his time at Fort Meade, Dakota.

His name will be included and honored with others in the new U.S. Colored Troops Memorial Monument being built in John G. Lancaster Park in Lexington Park, MD
