Obituary for Maxine Juanita Mason Rickerd

Maxine Mason Rickerd of Eureka, died on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at Vintage Park in Eureka the age of 101.

Maxine was born on September 3, 1909 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, the daughter of Alex and Esther (Fred) Kirschbaum. Maxine attended school in Reece, Kansas. After graduation she attended the University of Oklahoma attaining a bachelor's degree in English and then teaching school throughout the Greenwood County area. Maxine taught school until the 1960's and was a substitute teacher into the 1970's.

On May 23, 1950, Maxine was united in marriage to W.R. Mason, in Hamilton. Maxine and Bill were owners of the Eureka Rexall Drug Store in partnership with Earl Rickerd from the early 1940's until 1958. Earl and Bill divided their parternership and Ted Mariani became Bill's partner in the drug store. Earl then bought Bill's share of the Merriam Kansas Rexall Drug Store.

Maxine continued to work at the Rexall until Bill retired and sold his share of the store to Ted Mariani in 1981. Bill preceded her in death on March 31, 1980. Maxine was the united in marriage to Earl Rickerd on January 25, 1986 in Mesa, Arizona. They resided in Arizona for a short time until Earl's death on March 23, 1999. Maxine then returned to Eureka. She continued to work in the Mariani Rexall Drug Store, periodically, as a loyal employee with her sister Christine, until Ted retired and closed the store in 2000.

She was a member of the Christian & Congregational Church, a long time member of the Entre Nous Club, Eureka Country Club, Coterie Bridge Club, Greenwood County Hospital Auxiliary, and the Babson Midwest Memorial Foundation, and was a charter member of the American Association of University Women.

Maxine is survived by three great-nieces; two nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, one brother, one sister, and a niece, Virginia Lee Reid.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, September 17, 2010, at Koup Family Funeral Home with Reverend Rhonda K. Almond of the Christian & Congregational Church officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Greenwood County Hospital or the Christian & Congregational Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
