Nickles John Holmes was the founder of Holmes Bible College in Greenville, SC. The emphasis for the college started in Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church in Laurens County, SC when a group of its members left the church and started the Presbyterian Holiness Church. The Presbyterian Holiness Church eventually merged with the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Franklin Springs, Ga. Holmes Bible College grew from that to prepare ministers for the work of the P.H. Church. Nickles J. Holmes had such an influence on Oscar Eugene Taylor, who was a professor of Bible in the early days of the college, that he named his son Joseph Nickles Taylor who named his son David Nickles Taylor and two generations later, a grandson named Justin Nickles Taylor. Nickles was a family last name in the Holmes family.
Nickles J. Holmes' father was Zelotes Holmes who had been a minister at Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church and built the Octagon House in Laurens, SC. The unusual eith-sided house had a draft system in the attic from the unusual design that kept the rooms cool in the summer. The persistent rumor was that a tunnel ran from the basement of the house to the square of Laurens, SC. There is a bricked up passage way in the basement, but the rumor is unconfirmed. There were also rumors of slaves being buried in the basement, but surface digging never confirmed that rumor either.
