Ray was the fourth child of five children born to Glenn Blenkarn Hughey and Lenora Elizabeth Hurt. He had an older brother, Ralph (1930-2005), two older sisters (Marie Joyce and Barbara) and 1 younger brother (Marvin Leroy). He was in the U.S. Army for many years. He married Edna Jane Corey and they had two children:
