Edward Douglas Waggy, 27, of Laramie, Wyoming and formerly of Franklin, West Virginia passed away unexpectedly at his apartment in Laramie on December 3, 2011.
He was born February 24, 1984 at Harrisonburg, VA, the son of Charles D. and Paula J. (Dickerson) Waggy. He was the grandson of Pauline and the late Carson Waggy of Reeds Creek, and Mary and the late Paul Dickerson of North Canton, OH.
Ed graduated from Pendleton County High School in 2002. He attended the University of Wyoming and earned a bachelor's degree in 2007 and an MS in kinesiology in 2011. He worked as a Wildland Fire Fighter for the U.S. Forest Service for nine seasons. Ed worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Wyoming from 2006-2011.
Ed Waggy, a M.S. degree program graduate in Kinesiology and Health, was selected as an American Kinesiology Association National Graduate Scholar for 2011. The award honors a select number of students whose academic leadership records are distinctive. These students, who were nominated by faculty, have demonstrated an exceptional interest in the field of kinesiology by undertaking independent or guided research, assuming leadership positions, and having the potential for making a significant impact on the field. Ed completed his B.S degree in Kinesiology and Health Promotion, University of Wyoming, in May 2007, and graduated with his M.S. degree in May 2011. Ed is originally from Franklin, West Virginia.
Ed Waggy began his graduate endeavors in August 2007, when he was accepted into the M.S. degree program in the Division of Kinesiology and Health, University of Wyoming. Here, he soon developed a keen interest in cardiovascular and exercise physiology. Intrigued by the notion that exercise could be used as preventative medicine, Ed successfully designed and completed a study examining the effects of exercise training on the heart's ability to mount an appropriate stress response during exhaustive exercise, (a condition mimicking the heart's response to myocardial ischemia). The preliminary findings from his research thesis suggest that exercise training may help protect the heart in an ischemic setting. This research project was presented at the national meetings of the American College of Sports Medicine in 2009. On the academic front, Ed was an A student, had successfully written grant and travel proposals, and had been recognized as one of the University of Wyoming's outstanding graduate student teachers. He had hoped to continue these trends as a future health professional.
In addition to his parents and grandmothers, he is survived by his sister, Gretchen Grammer of Adelaide, Australia and his girlfriend, Sara Lookabill of Laramie, WY.
Funeral services were held December 10, 2011 at the Kimble Funeral Home, Franklin, West Virginia with Rev. Rita Beeman officiating. Interment in Cherry Hill Cemetery followed a graveside service by Rev. Beeman.
A Celebration of Life service was held on Friday, December 16, 2011 at the University of Wyoming Alumni House in Laramie, Wyoming.
