Hurlbut Edward Griswold
Among the early members of Sam Rice Post No. 6, of Alantic,
Iowa, few men more active or more faithful than Hurlbut E.
Griswold. He was the first post commander, and was reelected to that office. IN 1878, he was appointed senior vice commander of the Iowa Department Commander. He was born in Hancock County, Illinois on April 12th 1842. At
the age of twenty he enlisted as a private in Company C, One Hundred And Eighteenth Illinois Infantry, where he served
for thirty four months and until the close of the war.
As a strong advocate of the Grand Army of the Republic
and the pinciples for which it stood, Commander Griswold did much to build up membership in the organization. The
Grand Army he said, was designed to preserve and
strengthen the kind and fraternal feelings which bind together soldiers ands marines who united to suppress
the rebellion. To assist our needy and destitute comrades in arms, and the widows and orphans of those whose ties
with us were welded in the fire of battle. It was the Commander Griswold, Too, who received and welcomed Ex-president GRANT, at Council
Bluffs in 1879. Mr. Griswold died at St Joseph"s Hospital,
Keokuk on Sept 19, 1908 and was buried in Oakland Cemetery
at Hamilton, Illinois.

H.E. GRiswold, a leading real estate and loan agent of
Alantic, was born in Hancock county, Illinois, 19th day
of April 1843, and is a son of Dr. H.P. Griswold and
Lucy (Pettibone) Griswold. His father, was a native of New York and a graduate of the Union and Herkimer medical
colleges. soon after graduating he removed to Hancock
County, Illinois. where he practiced for twenty five years,
being one the first physicians of that county, Dr Griswolds
wife, who was a native of Connectient, died in Hancock
County in 1863, while his death occurred in 1881.
The subject of this sketch graduated at Ann Harbor, Michigan, in 1867, soon after which he came to Lewis,
Cass County, where he engaged in the practice of his
profession. In 1869 and 1870, he was deputy revenue collector, and in 1875 was again appointed, filling that office for ten years. He enlisted in 1862 in Company C,
One Hundred and Eighteenth Iliinois Infantry, and engaged
in the battles of Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Port
Gibson, Champion Hill, Black River Bridge and the siege
and capture of Vicksburg, and many others. He was mustered
out at Camp Butler in 1865. In 1869 Mr. Griswold came
to Alantic, and was among those who organize the present
business in 1879. He is a Master Mason, a member of the G.A.R., and in 1879, was elected State Commander of the
latter body. He was married in 1868, in Hancock County
Illinois to Rose Cherrill, a daughter of Adolphus Cherrill,
By this union there has been one child Alice.
