Frank Walter was born with the temperament of a good beekeeper – gentle, caring and mellow. The longtime Waterford resident, who died Tuesday at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto at age 76, proved that often during his life.

One night long ago, Walter and friend Lucille Shaw were moving behives in Mendota.
Walter's truck hit a bump and eight hives crashed to the ground.

"There were bees everywhere, and he just crawled up in the cab of the truck and went to sleep." Shaw said. "He said he'd figure it out come morning. That's the type of person he was. He never got stressed out about anything."

Walter, a beekeeper for 56 years, devoted much of his time toward teaching others to embrace his love of bees.

"I always hated honey, and so did my children," said Patricia Darner, Walter's daughter-in-law. "But when we were sick, he always insisted we have a tablespoon of honey with a drop of lemon in it. None of us liked it at first, bur sure enough, it made us feel better.

"Now, whenever I eat honey, I always remember dad."

Mr. Walter was born June 21, 1922, in White Sulpher Springs, Mont. In 1929, he moved to Waterford and stayed for 62 years. He returned to Montana in 1991.

He was a volunteer firefighter for 30 years, and served as chief of the Waterford-Hickman Fire Department in 1972.

Mr. Walter was a member and had served two terms as president of the Delta Beekeepers Club. He also belonged to the Central Valley Beekeepers Club, the California Beekeepers Association and the National Beekeepers Association.

He was a Navy veteran and belong to the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 26.

Mr. Walter is survived by his brother, George Walter of Waterford; sisters, Ruth Maples of Waterford, Fay Fuller of White Sulphur Springs, and Daisy Palmer of Modesto; sons, Steven and Paul Darner, of Modesto, and Robert Darner, of Clovis; his cargiver, Lucille Shaw of Waterford; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Southern Baptist Church, Waterford. Eaton Family Funeral & Cremation Service, Ceres, is in charge of arrangements. A graveside service will be conducted at a later date at Montana State Cemetery, Helena, Mont.
