Torrance Girl Dies of Leukemia On LA. Street
Shirley M. Damron, age 6-1/2 of 1447 W 219th St., Torrance, collapsed on the street and died Tuesday, apparently of leukemia, after she was taken to a hospital, sheriff's deputies said.
Shirley, who had been afflicted with the blood disease all her life, was with her mother Mrs. Jennie Damron, at 119th St. and Vermont ave., when she was stricken. She was taken to Southwest Industrial Hospital 6006 S. Western Ave., where Dr. A. B. Wilcox fought to save her life.
The girl had been receiving transfusions from a blood donor
in Long Beach whose blood type matched that of the girl's, but the donor could not be located by the mother Tuesday, deputies said. Because blood factors in leukemia cases have to be paired exactly, donors are comparatively rare, Dr. Wilcox said.
Funeral services in charge of Stone and Myers are pending
awaiting word from the family regarding possible burial In Lubbock, Texas, her birth place. The father, L. E. Damron, and maternal and paternal grand parents survive.
