The son of Daniel and Electa (Root) Alderman.

William was a 24 year old butcher from Greenfield, MA, when he enlisted on July 24, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. I. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal and subsequently to the rank of Sergeant on Nov. 1, 1862. Described as a fine singer, William was the leader of the Regiment's glee club. He was promoted and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant on Jan. 15, 1864, but declined the commission. He was mustered out as a Sergeant on Sept. 2, 1864 at the expiration of his three year enlistment.

Following the war William resided in Albany, NY for one year, where he worked as a bookkeeper and then moved to Middlefield, MA, where he farmed. He was married to Anna E. Hapgood in Chester, NH on Nov. 7, 1866. She was born in New Hampshire, the daughter of George T. and Catherine Hapgood. They were the parents of Kate E., born April 6, 1868; Mary A., born Aug. 12, 1871; Jennie E., born July 1, 1876; and Etta E., born May 3, 1873.

In the 1890s William, who had moved to West Springfield, MA wrote a series of articles on his Civil War experiences which appeared in Sunday editions of the Springfield Republican. Suffering from near deafness, caused by chronic pharyngitis, and asthma, he died at age 67 in West Springfield.
