-Born in Pennsylvania and came to Illinois in 1846 with his brother, Joel, who was the founder of the village of Palatine.
-Taught school in the early years, conducted a general store in Palatine, was postmaster of Palatine for 10 years, township treasurer for 28 years, as well as other positions of trust in the community.
-His father was a survivor of the Revolutionary War.
-Married in 1851 to Jane Wilson and 3 children were born to them.
-Wife, Jane, and two children died in 1872 within a period of five weeks.
-Later married Sarah A. Sayles, in 1873. Sarah died in 1899.
-Died at his daughter's home in Elgin, Illinois.
