George W. Barnes, Sr. Sept. 9, 1912 - Dec. 7, 2006 George W. Barnes, Sr. passed into the loving arms of his Heavenly Father in the early morning of December 7, 2006 at the age of 94. Life for this extraordinary husband, father and friend began September 9, 1912 in Webberville, Texas the son of George R. Barnes and Lottie Fowler Barnes. Mr. Barnes graduated from Austin High School in 1931 where he had been an athlete on the schools track team. He retired, after 43 years, in 1979 from Miller Blueprint Company in Austin. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church for many years. He had an inherent artistic talent that he expressed mainly through his oil painting, creating many beautiful paintings to be enjoyed by family and friends. His love of art began when a primary school teacher demonstrated deep appreciation for a drawing he had given to her by rewarding him with good grades. He loved reading, mainly western novels and Texas history, and loved to watch football games and western movies on TV. He was loved by those who knew him for his quiet nature and his dry, witty sense of humor. He had a strong will and when he made up his mind to do something that was good, he did it right then. If all mankind were as gentle and peaceful as this man was, there would be no strife in this world. Preceded in death by his son, George W. Barnes, Jr., he is survived by the love of his life, Ruth Anne Blackwell Barnes after celebrating 62 years of marriage, one son Charles Michael Barnes of Austin and one daughter Sandra Barnes-Ballard and her husband Porter N. Ballard of Covington, VA as well as four grand-children and three great-grandchildren. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Jonathon Klocek, the family's caregiver and special friend Linda Ruth Jennings and to the staff of Hospice Austin for their special care and concern for Mr. Barnes and his family. Visitation will be Monday, December 11, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Faith United Methodist Church, 2701 South Lamar Blvd. in Austin. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 3:00 pm with Reverend Sheree Maberry Harris, pastor of Faith Church officiating. Interment will be at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park, 6300 W. William Cannon Blvd, Austin, TX 78749. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in George's memory be made to Hospice Austin and/or Faith United Methodist Church.
