Rev. Raymond A. Devlin, S.J., 87, died December 6, 2011 in Regis Infirmary, Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, after a brief illness.
Ray was born in San Francisco on October 7, 1924. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School and entered the Jesuit Novitiate at Los Gatos in 1942. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Gonzaga University and taught religion, mathematics and English at St. Ignatius High, 1949-52, while serving as a football and basketball coach. Theological studies were made at Alma College, Los Gatos, and he was ordained a priest in St. Mary's Cathedral, San Francisco, in June 1955. Upon completion of studies, Ray returned to St. Ignatius as religion teacher and track and cross country coach, 1958-65, and in the same capacities at Bellarmine College Preparatory, San Jose, 1966-71. He also served as chaplain at Santa Clara County Boys' Ranch, 1971-76.
Ray was assigned to pastoral work at St. Mary's Church, Ogden, Utah, from 1977 to 1990. In addition, he served as chaplain, teacher and coach at St. Joseph's High School in Ogden. Later assignments included ministry at St. Thomas More Church, Paradise, Calif., and for the last several years at Our Lady of Peace Church in Santa Clara.
Ray was preceded in death by his brother, Rev. J. Joseph Devlin, S.J. He is survived by his brother Paul of Layfette, California and his sister Ann Marie Jones of Concord, California, and many nephews and nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Peace Church, 2800 Mission College Boulevard, Santa Clara, at 10:00 a.m., December 12, 2011. Burial will follow at the Jesuit plot at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, 490 Lincoln Street, Santa Clara.
