MRS. MARY E. HAMMOND
Mary Elizabeth Stewart was born on August 27, 1856 at Mansfield, Ohio and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. glen Sewell in Sabetha, Kansas, on April 26, 1941, age 84 years, 7 months and 29 days. Her mother and father passed away before she was seven years of age, however this did not deter her from getting an education. She attended Central college, Iberia, Ohio at the same time as Tom McNeal, editor of the Kansas farmer. She looked forward to reading his editorial page every two weeks in his paper.

She was married to Marshall Hammond in Ohio and immediately came to Kansas starting housekeeping on a farm six miles south of Hiawatha where they lived for about sixteen years when they moved to Pawnee City, Neb. Mr. Hammond died in 1911, but Mrs. Hammond continued to maintain this home until 1920. Since that time she has lived with her children spending a few months with each, until the last several years when she spent most of her time with her daughter, Mrs. Glen Sewell, in Sabetha.

Mrs. Hammond was a devout Christian and read her Bible daily and wherever she was she made liberal contribution of her service to the church work. She taught Sunday School classes in the United Presbyterian Church at Hiawatha and First congregational Church at Sabetha.

She was interested in higher education and was gratified that most of her children were able to attend universities and most of her grandchildren have done likewise.

She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Annetta Batchelder of Hiawatha; Mrs. Elsie A. Anderson, of Loveland, Colo.; Miss Ola O. Hammond of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Mallie B. Sewell of Sabetha; and Robert S. Hammond of Muscotah; fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A short service was held Monday morning at the Reinhart Funeral Home conducted by Rev. E. L. Baker, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Sabetha and at the United Presbyterian Church at Pawnee City, conducted by Rev. Thompson. Interment in Pawnee City Cemetery.
