David Ramon Beck Sr., 79, Peru, went to be with our father in heaven Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011. He was born July 8, 1932, in Peru to Frank and Mable (Quinn) Beck.

He graduated in 1951 from Chili High School, where he was a proud member of Bob Macy's first basketball team. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean and Vietnam wars as an electrician mate, first class. He played on the Navy basketball team as a starting point guard, and he was a starting pitcher for the Naval fast pitch traveling softball team. He brought his skills back to Miami County and traveled the tri-state area amassing a record of 636 wins and only 32 losses, one of which was defeating "The King and his Court" in the 1970s. During his service to the country, he was awarded the two-star Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, two National Defense Service Medals, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After he retired from the Navy, he went to work for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad, where he worked as a conductor and train engineer for 17 years before retiring.

He was a member of Roanoke, Huntington, Wabash, North Manchester and Peru American Legions and Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he held several posts, including chaplin. He was also a member of the Eagles, Elks, Moose and The Lions Club. He was the announcer for the Little League home games in Andrews, Wabash and Peru.

He was an avid basketball enthusiast. He enjoyed watching Chris Smith play golf at Rock Hollow, sponsoring children from St. Jude's Hospital, listening to his two favorite singers, Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle, whom he grew up with playing bingo. And, of course, spending time with his family, friends and newest great-granddaughter, Isabella Nicole.

He is survived by his loving children, David R. (Lisa) Beck Jr., Roxann Beck, Sandra (Chris) Avery, Debra (Kenneth) Pierce, Kathryn Bailey, Albert (Angel) Ousley, Tamara (Edward) Robertson; 17 wonderful grandchildren, Dustin, Jasmine, Gloria, Krystal, Alisha, Brian, Amanda, Amber, Caleb, Trisha, Donna, Lisa, Ashley, Rusty, Jake, Cynthia and Melinda; several great grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Miller and Elizabeth (Craigh) Bruce, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ronald Beck, and two sisters, Eloise Phiffer and Joanne Mitchell.

He was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother and friend, and he will be greatly missed by all.

Visitation is 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Flowers Leedy Funeral Home in Peru, with a ceremony following from 11 a.m. to noon. Burial will immediately follow at 1 p.m. in the Marion VA Cemetery in Marion.
