Theodore is a veteran of the Civil War. He first served as a Corporal in King's Company (Company A) of the Railroad Patrol Guard, U.S. Reserve Corps, Missouri Infantry. This unit guarded railroads. Theodore enlisted on September 26, 1861, and mustered into service on October 20, 1861. He served until the unit mustered out of service on January 23, 1862. Theodore next served as a 4th Sergeant in Captain Augustine's Company (Co. D) of the 1st Enrolled Missouri Militia, which was organized on August 27, 1862, at Allenton. Although he enrolled on this date, he was not called into active service until September 25, 1864, when the Missouri Enrolled Militia was called into active service to repel General Sterling Price's Confederate troops. Theodore served from September 25 until October 16, 1864. He later received an invalid pension.

Theodore farmed on a farm one mile west of Allenton. The 1893 map of Allenton shows T.J. Schwartz with land southwest of town, abutting the railroad and the road to Pacific. His farm, a little over 58 acres in all, was situated directly south of the Allen property.

In February of 1898, Theodore advertised his farm for sale, as he wanted to go south for his health. He never made it. Theodore died from pneumonia at his home in Allenton just six days after the ad was published in the paper.

Theodore married twice. His first wife, Nancy Jane (maiden name unknown) died in August of 1871. Theodore married Maria Melvina Romines on April 13, 1873, at Allenton. Four known children with Nancy; six with Maria.
