He was the beloved husband of Margaret Rudolph Kump who he married in South Bend, IN on 07/23/1935. His wife was the daughter of Governor Herman Guy Kump. He was the son of Benjamin Lewis Roberts and Madelene Shepherd Fox. As a youngster he was active in scouting and 4-H. He earned his BS degree and studied medicine two years at West Virginia University. He completed his medical education in 1937 at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Roberts served as a World War II surgeon for the 47th Regiment, of the IX Division in North Africa and Europe. He sent testimony to the Nuremberg Trials concerning the inhuman conditions he found at Dachau Concentration Camp. After the war, Dr. Roberts returned to practice medicine in Elkins, West Virginia. During his 45 years of medical practice, he delivered 5,612 babies -- more than half of the population of Elkins. He and his wife had six children of their own. His epitaph reads: "Devoted Father, Friend, and Physician who Served the Lord with Gladness."
