Lena Ahonen, 91, of Rice Lake died Nov. 28 at Rice Lake Convalescent Center. Memorial services are Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Applyard's Home for Funerals in Rice Lake, with the Rev. David Oberts officiating. Visitation is Friday at the funeral home from noon until the service. A memoral Mass is Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley. Visitation is Saturday at the church for 1 hour before the service.
Mrs. Ahonen was born to Dominic and Margaret (Nora) Vittone on Dec. 13, 1911 in Kimball. She married Nestor Ahonen at Hurley on July 25, 1931. They owned and operated a grocery store in Kimball for several years before moving to Hurley, where Mr. Ahonen worked in the lumbering business there and in Ironwood. He later went to work for the Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Department, and the couple lived in several Wisconsin communities before moving to Rice Lake. The Ahonens also owned and operated the Colon Point Trailer Park in Rice Lake until retirement.
She is survived by two daughters, Evelyn Clark of Loves Park, Ill., and Nora Ahonen of Rice Lake; three sons, Robert of Cedar, Minn., Thomas of Arnold, Mo., and Carl of Dunedin, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles of Ironwood; and a sister, Rosie Pertile of Ironwood.Mrs. Ahonen’s husband, Nestor, died in 1995.
