Delbert's father, George Sylvester Webb, was carrying kerosene in a lamp to light the fire. The lamp had been sitting outside in the snow and, unknown to him, it had cracked. He carried it inside and lit the fire, not realizing that he had leaked a trail of kerosene outside into the house. As soon as he lit the stove, the fire was ignited, taking the house quickly.

Lyman (age 15) and his brother, Delbert (age 9), were trapped upstairs and unable to get out. George never really spoke much for years after that as he blamed himself. The neighbors were fantastic and built a new house for them straight away.
