Squire Patrick Calhoun, father of John C. Calhoun, paid court to Rose Reid after the death of his first wife when he spent the night at Col. George Reid's home. He thus became the rival of Major John Bowie for Rose's hand. When Squire Calhoun conducted family worship on one of his later visits, Rose slipped out of the window and rode off behind John Bowie on his horse. They were married that night.
In a Google Books snippet from North Carolina - South Carolina Bible Records (by Jeannette Holland Austin, Heritage Books, 2008, page 244), I found "Capt. George Reid Bible" owned by Raymond M. Bell of State College, PA. It lists Capt. George Reed born 12/23/1719 in Ireland who married Abigal Leger, born in France and died in Abbeville 11/3/1786. There children were Rosa who married Major John Bowie; Ann (Nancy) born 12/25/1747 and died 1/12/1769 who married Capt. William Raskin, Jr.; Margaret who married Hugh Reid and then William Cauder Baskin; Samuel who married Caroline Thomson; Alexander; and Joseph (Lieut.) born 6/5/1756 who married Isabella Baskin.

Inscription
She departed this life on the 29th day of March 1807, in the sixty-fourth year of her age. Her high and merited eulogy is recorded in the grief of her bereaved and disconsolate husband, the tears of a large circle of friends and acquaintances and the underlying love of her children. She was indeed, the most affectionate and faithful of wives; the kindest and most confiding of friends and as her children can all attest, the best and most devoted of mothers. In her death, she had the cheering hope of a happy immortality, through the merits of the redeemer whom in life she had loved and humbly endeavored to serve.
