Joseph Hodapp enlisted in the Union Army at the start of the Civil War, rose to the rank of Sergeant in Company H, 1st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, and was mortally wounded at Todd's Tavern, Virginia, dying of those wounds on June 5, 1864.
On May 7, 1868 she married John Miller.
