The son of Samuel Starret Coy (1888-1959) and Lydia "Elton" (Pond) Coy (1897-1952), he graduated from Arcola High School, served in the Army during the Korean Conflict, then graduated from Eastern Illinois University. He became a teacher and coach before working for Federal Kemper Insurance Company in Decatur, Illinois for many years. He was married to Myra Joy Strader on Nov. 4, 1951 in the Hindsboro Christian Church, Hindsboro, Illinois. They had 6 children, David Kent, Diana Le, Kevin Scott, Karen Sue, Ellen Kay, and Erika Lyn, plus 14 grandchildren.
