He graduated from Kansas State University and remained his alma mater's most loyal fan. He retired from the federal government in 2007 after 30 years of service. He was an Eagle Scout, a Boy Scout and Cub Scout Master, and was awarded the Scouter's Key and the Order of the Arrow. He served in Desert Storm and numerous other classified missions overseas. He was a deacon at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
