Chandler - Chanler

Grandson of a Former Prominent Batavian, Married at Geneseo.

Geneseo, July 8. — The wedding of Miss Gabrielle Chanler and Porter Ralph Chandler, both of Geneseo, was celebrated at Sweetbriar farm, home of the brides parents, at 11 o'clock this morning, the Rev. George T. Jones officiating. George Gardner Monks of Boston was best man, and Mrs. E. D. Morgan, Jr., of Westbury, Long Island, first cousin of the bride, was the only attendant.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Winthrop Chanler of Geneseo. The groom is the only son of Mrs. Porter Chandler, who was Miss Wadsworth, and of the late Porter Chandler, son of Admiral Ralph Chandler, U.S.N., at one time a prominent resident of Batavia. The groom’s father, the late Porter Ralph Chandler, was a brother of the late Mrs. Le Roy Parker of Batavia. Only immediate relatives were present at the wedding including Mrs. Ralph Chandler Parker of Batavia.

The wedding of Miss Gabrielle Chanler and Porter Ralph Chandler, both of Geneseo, was celebrated at Sweetbrier Farm, home of the bride's parents at eleven o'clock yesterday morning, the Rev. George T. Jones officiating. George Gardner Monks, of Boston, was best man; and Mrs. E. D. Morgan, Jr., of Westbury, Long Island, first cousin of the bride, was the only attendant. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Winthrop Chanler of Geneseo. Tho groom is the only son of Mrs. Porter Chandler, who was Miss Wadsworth, and Wife of the late Porter Chandler, son of Admiral Ralph Chandler, U. S. N. Only immediate relatives were present.

Attorney Succumbs

GENESEO - Porter R. Chandler, 80, retired New York City attorney, died in his sleep Tuesday, Nov. 6, 1979, at his home on Center Street.

Mr. Chandler attended St. Mark's Preparatory School and graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in classics and government from Harvard in 1920 He was a native of York.

He received his law degree from Columbia University in 1924 and later received honorary doctorates of law from St. John's University and Manhattan Collage. He served in both World Wars.

He was a member of the New York City Board of Higher Education, which has Jurisdiction over City College of New York and other Institutions for many years and was chairman of the board from 1968 to 1989.

As a member of the board, he was involved in the founding of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Mr. Chandler donated the land on Which the Trappist Abbey of the Genesee was built in the town of York and was instrumental in getting the order to establish itself in Livingston County, He will be buried at the Abbey Saturday morning beside his wife, Gabrielle, who died in 1958.

He is survived by a son, David, of Australia; a daughter, Judith, wife of Livingston County Judge J. Robert Houston, a daughter, Mary Jackson of Amherst, Mass.; and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Joseph R. Chandler of Geneseo.
