Sally May Akard KINGSPORT, Tenn. Sally May Akard, 88, passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Brookhaven Manor, Kingsport. Sally was a school teacher and taught at Madisonville Elementary, Jonesville Elementary and Decataur Elementary; she taught for a total of 30 years. She was a member of Wheeler United Methodist Church. Sally was a member of Fairmont Garden Club, F.C. E., Sullivan County retired teachers association and U.M.W. She was a former volunteer for Contact Concern. Sally enjoyed reading, flowers and taking miniature horses to nursing homes, schools, hospitals and churches. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lawrence Neil McDowell; her second husband, Charles Eugene Akard; her parents, Clyde and Lora Sprinkle Bledsoe; her brother, Clyde Bledsoe Jr.; and her daughter-in-law, Janice Pitcock McDowell. She is survived by her daughter, Anita White (Rick) of Madisonville, Tenn.; her son, Joseph L. McDowell of Madisonville, ; her stepson, Charles C. Akard (Susan) of Texas; four granddaughters; one stepgranddaughter; four great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; one stepgreat-grandson; sister, Mary Jean Botts of Kingsport; sister-in-law, Lena Bledsoe of Jonesville, Va.; and brother, Ray Bledsoe (Louise) of Jonesville. The family will receive friends from 1 - 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at Wheeler United Methodist Church, 211 Sanders Street, Blountville, TN 37617. Memorial services will follow at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Stuart Albee officiating. Memorials may be sent to Wheeler United Methodist Church, 211 Sanders Street, Blountville, TN 37617 or Milligan College, P.O. Box 500, Milligan College, TN 37682. Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is serving the Akard family.
