Mr. Coker, 74, of Toomsuba, went home to be with his Lord Monday, December 12, 2011, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was a retired postmaster and lifelong resident of Toomsuba, Mississippi.

Charles was born on July 11, 1937, in Meridian, Mississippi. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a B.S. in Industrial Management in 1958. He also served in the Air National Guard. In 1960, he followed in his father's footsteps and began a 36 year career with the United States Postal Service, serving in the positions of mail carrier and postal clerk between 1960 and 1972, then Postmaster of Toomsuba from 1972 until his retirement in 1996. He also owned and operated Coker's Grocery in Toomsuba for many years.

Charles was a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Toomsuba Baptist Church for many years and spent much time reading and studying scripture. He gave his life to Christ at an early age and devoted his life to serving his Lord and serving others. He was known for his kindness and generosity to anyone in need. His Christian values guided his life, and he routinely ministered to people he encountered throughout his years working at the post office and grocery store. He prayed every night that he would be a blessing to someone the next day, and he certainly was to so many people. He considered it a privilege to help anyone in need. He truly never met a stranger!

Charles was a loving, devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family and spending time outdoors. He had a wonderful sense humor and an endearing, vibrant personality. His strong Christian values, kindness, and selfless, loving ways have been a true inspiration to his family, and they feel so blessed to have had the privilege of loving him and being loved by him. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Kathryn Dell Coker; daughters Beth Smith and husband John, Alison Irwin and husband Les, and Charla Pierce and husband Sam, all of Toomsuba; grandchildren Lacy Kelly, Alex Smith, and Justin Irwin; great-grandchildren Madison and Rylee Grace Kelly; sister, Elaine Jackson of Dallas, Texas; uncle, T.S. Pigford of Collinsville; lifelong friend, Dennis Morgan of Toomsuba; and special friend and caregiver during his illness, Jestine Terrell. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lamar and Gussie Coker.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Morgan, Tommy Butler, Alton Parten, Jimmy Roberson, Asa Boswell, and Jay Pierce.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Gideon's International.

Visitation will be at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home on Thursday, December 15, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
