I Understand Him, Better Each Day. I was, quite young, when Richard, left home, to attend school and eventually, to serve, his country. I did not understand why, he took the calling back, then, but as I get older, I realize what drove him, to do this. He loved his family and his country and although, his beliefs would not allow him to fight for us all, he clearly felt, God wanted him, to do something to help, his comrades and defend his country. He was, much loved and respected and sorely missed, to this day. I think of you often Richard and I hope you know, how proud, we are of you. Becky Popson, sister, [email protected]

Richard was, a very fine, young man. Although, his hometown is listed, as Orlando, FL., he was actually, born and raised, in Rome, GA.. Both, of his parents were natives, of Rome and he was born here, but was living in Orlando, at the time, he enlisted. He was studying to become, a Nazarene minister and when drafted, registered, as an objector. However, he did agree to serve, but declined, to bear arms. Of course, he became, a medic and the rest, is history. He died courageously, performing his duty, by attending, the guys in his outfit that had been hit. He is, long gone, but certainly, not forgotten. Tom Caldwell [email protected] Cousin.

He served as a Combat Medic with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 5th Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Medic's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
