Sherwin Guidry wrote-Gustave's father,Thomas, passed his boat building experience down to Gustave. In the great storm of 1909 Gustave spent the night in his boat which was tied to a tree in Bush Canal.Water rose to the roofs of some homes forcing people into their attics. When it was over and waters subsided,a stern wheeler came to pick up survivors. The women and children were taken to Houma and the men stayed behind to clean up the mess.Nearly 75% of the homes were destroyed and 30 to 40 bodies of friends and relatives were found. Some Rhodes began to leave le Terrebonne for higher ground in Houma,Lake Charles and Morgan City,La. Gustave kept building boats. He patented the first V bottom boatin this area. The storm of 1926 came and everyone was forced to leave Bush Canal.Gustave tied his boat next to Dumas Cemetary, below Montegut,La. and there he weathered the storm. This storm uprooted march for miles and deposited it along the highway and bayou preventing people from getting back to their homes. It took 6 days for the dredge to dig a pass so people could get home. This storm ended the 100 years old settlement below Madison.Only the four Rhodes burried on the Indian mound remain to whisper about when the days were good in le Terrebonne.Gustave built a home in Montegut,La. and started his boat business again.Life was hard in the 1930's,recalls Gustaves son,Myrtile. "I can remember getting up at one in the morning and paddling a flat bottom boat 12to 14 miles to catch fish. Then 9 or 10 in the morning paddle back up the bayou to sell the fish at three or four cents a pound." Myrtile and his brothers also trapped for a living and this was how he made enough money to purchase his boat.He and his father built it and he learned his father's trade."God made no greater place, because if he did,Montegut would not be here today,"Myrtile said. "I hope many more Rhodes will continue to live here on the bayou as they have in the past." Something special must be here because 6 generations of Rhodes have livedon the bayou.Neither time nor the grim reaper himself can drive the Rhodes away from Le Terrebonne.
