George Washington Clarke was born April 13, 1841, near Roscoe, Coshocton, Ohio. He was a son of Moses Clark and Susan Louisa Coffman. He moved to Illinois when he was 12 years old and at the age of 20 joined the army. He served as Private in Company I Reg't 11 Missouri Infantry & Served as Private in Company E Reg't 7 Ill. Cavalry. On Feb 15, 1863, he became a prisoner of war at the Libby Prison, where he spent months malnourished and suffering from scurvy. He was given honorable discharge in 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee.

In 1868 he married Nancy Lucinda Wood in Canton, Missouri. He spent most of his life as a farmer, first in Adams county, Illinois and then in 1906 he moved with his family to Shelby, Missouri where he spent the remainder of his years.

He was listed as a Blacksmith in 1889 in the Kansas, Grand Army of the Republic Bound Post Records, 1866-1931
