It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of ALBERTO (BETO) BENAVIDEZ MUNOZ, SR., age 92, on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. Beto was born the eldest son of Emilio Monsivaiz Munoz and Maria Gregoria Benavidez Munoz on August 26, 1919 in Santa Rita. With the unexpected passing of his father, Beto assumed the duties of head of the household at the age of 19 and helped his mother raise the family, of which a sister, Erlinda (Chanchi) Castillo and a brother, Ricardo Munoz still survive. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Jimenez Munoz and his brothers, Gonzalo, David, Reynaldo and Samuel Munoz and sisters, Corina Herrera and Elisaida Carrillo.

Beto is survived by his current wife, Irma, and his children, Albert J. (Jackie) Munoz and wife, Amparo Arvizu, Genevieve (Baba) Placencio and husband Nick, Clara Padilla, David (Davy) Munoz and wife, Yolanda, Marie Antoinette (Toni) Salaiz and husband, Michael, and Lorenzo (Larry) Thomas Munoz, 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his extended family, Rene Moreno and wife, Mirna, Isabel Gutierrez and husband, Raymundo, Delfino Moreno, Jr. and wife, Jazhel Moreno and Mavel Moreno and their children.
Beto served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during WWII and also in the New Mexico National Guard. He was employed with Kennecott Copper Corporation in Santa Rita as a heavy equipment mechanic, and was instrumental in organizing Steelworkers Local 890, as well as being featured in the film, Salt of the Earth. Beto was employed by the State of New Mexico as an auditor and was very active in politics. As a great baseball player that he was, he subsequently became active in umpiring baseball games. He was as great cook, active in the church and community activities and always helping people. Beto educated himself and would prepare tax returns and help complete legal documents for the general public. He was a great speaker and fluent in both English and Spanish; was hired to give lectures at the local university and at eulogies and on radio. He will be greatly missed by all.

Calling hours for Beto will be held from 6 PM to 8 PM Monday, October 3, 2011 in Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road in Las Cruces, where the Funeral Service is scheduled for 9 AM Tuesday, October 4, 2011. Concluding Service and Interment will follow at 1 PM at Fort Bayard National Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the New Mexico Army National Guard.

Family and friends are invited to join in fellowship after the interment at the National Guard Armory in Santa Clara.

Serving as casket bearers will be Steve Munoz, Guy Placencio, Todd Placencio, David Michael Munoz, Rene Moreno and Delfino Moreno.

Special thanks go out to the staff at The Village at Northrise, Dr. Ann Mercer, and to the staff at Memorial Medical Center for their hard work and round the clock care that they provided to Beto.
