According to my father, a greater man had never lived. Sadly, he passed away while the family was on vacation, believing that they would not return for him as promised. Even though his wife passed away and left him with a young son, my Grandfather (whom I never met) raised him himself with the help of a house keeper. My father never forgot that.
What Dad never mentioned was that his father fought during WWI. I am doing more research into this. If my Grandpa was a better man than my father thought himself to be, then he must have been a saint. The saying, therefore, must be true - like father, like son.
