Deceased Name: Wilmer F. Bailey
Wilmer F. Bailey, father of Marvel resident Patricia Bailey Arny, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, in Wheat Ridge. He was 89.

Also known as "Beetle," he was born to Nevin and Maude (Faust) Bailey on Jan. 15, 1921, in Hamburg, Pa. He lived with his mother; stepfather, Percy Wink; and siblings until he went into the Army Air Corps in 1940.

Mr. Bailey was injured at Wheeler Field at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. As a navigator on B-17 bombers in World War II, he was based in Italy from 1944 to 1945. He went on to serve in the Air Force Reserves for 12 years after the war.

In 1945, he married Durango High School graduate Avery Jane McKelvey Jahn in Houston. The marriage later ended in divorce.

Mr. Bailey graduated from Louisiana State University with a forestry degree in 1950. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado, California and Maryland. Between 1960 and the mid-1970s, the Bailey family spent summers in Durango with Mrs. Bailey's mother, Dorothea McKelvey, while Mr. Bailey flew pest-control flights for the forest service. He also was an aerial photographer and mapped insect infestations across the country.

In 1974, he married Rosemary Reagan in Golden.

After retiring from the forest service, Mr. Bailey worked for his favorite hardware store and then retired in 2005 from a local car dealership where he chauffeured clients and worked in the office.

Mr. Bailey played Santa Claus for 35 years for the forest service, the American Legion, retirement homes and various other groups. He was a member of Pearl Harbor Survivors, VFW and the American Legion. He was a Mason and a Shriner.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Rosemary Reagan Bailey, of Wheat Ridge; daughters Patricia Bailey Arny of Marvel and Kathryn Bailey Gibson of Southgate, Mich.; stepchildren Steven Reagan, Joseph Reagan and Julia King, all of the Denver area; brothers Edward Bailey and Dale Bailey; sisters Dorothy Bailey Grim and Nancy Bailey Sweitzer; seven grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
