O G ATHERTON DIES
Was Past Commander of Lawton-Wayne Post G.A.R
O G ATHERTON, aged 77, a past commander of Lawton Wayne Post GAR, and a resident of this city for the past 14 years, died at 11:20 o'clock Monday night of apoplexy, at his home, 3236 Fairfield Avenue.
Mr Atherton served during the civil war in Company A, 40th regiment of the Kentucky Volunteers from July 17, 1863 to Dec 30, 1864.
]After the war he became a veterinary surgeon and later became affiliated with the bureau of animal industry, a department of the national department of agriculture.
He served as a federal meat inspector for several years and was then transferred to this city 14 years ago. Mr ATHERTON was retired from the service of the bureau in August 1921, after having served 27 years. He was a member of Our
Home lodge No 881, IOOF. During his residence here Mr ATHERTON was active in GAR circles and served one term as commander of the Lawton-Wayne post.
Surviving are the widow; two sons, F E ATHERTON of Chicago, and I K ATHERTON of Hyattsville MD, and two daughters, Mrs M A ALLEN of Wenatchee WA,and Mrs May WHITEHILL, of Oakland CA.
