Colonel Ellsworth Reynolds, 78, a resident of Tacoma for 34 years and a former building contractor, died Tuesday at his home, 1320 South 7th street, where he lived with his daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Gordon. He was a native of Indiana.

According to Mrs. Gordon, her father did not acquire the title of colonel by services in the U. S. Army, but by acclamation of the members of Company K of an Indiana regiment of which his father, William Reynolds, was a lieutenant during the Civil war which went with the Union army of occupation to Tennessee following General Lee's surrender. Ellsworth, small, was taken by his mother from Indiana to Tennessee, for the warmer climate, his health being poor and the soldiers took a liking to the baby. He had the run of the barracks and was nick named "Colonel." One day it was made official on the drill field and it was his pride during his after life, so he made it official himself and always signed his first name as "Colonel."

Mr. Reynolds leaves, besides his daughter, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Piper will make the funeral announcement.
