The Following obituary is from 'The Meeting' (a newsletter for Haverford Quaker Meeting) Number 90 - Haverford, Pennsylvania - Eleventh Month, 1945, page 2.

A little girl used to sit on the steps of the gallery in Haverford Meeting House, every First Day, beside her father. She was Mary Garrigues. Her grandfather, Samuel, had owned the Meeting House property, this being but a fraction of the large family estate extending along the present College Avenue to Tunbridge Road and west along Buck Lane to Coopertown Road. The first sessions of the present Meeting were held near Turnbridge Road on Garrigues land. Thus very early Mary Garrigues became identified with Haverford Meeting.

She was educated at Miss Markley's School at Bryn Mawr, at a school on the Lloyd property and at Westtown. In 1890 she married Richard S. Dewees, ans had a daughter, Hannah Garrigues Dewees. Although maintaining a lively interest in everything modern, Mary Dewees followed a more gracious way of life than ours today, marked by an old-time hospitality. There were quilting parties with ancestral quilting frames. There were glasses of homemade jelly bestowed at Christmas time; recipes for cookies 'handed down'; lavish gifts of flowers, rooted or cut, from her exquisite gardens. There were famous 'Porch Parties'. For the long-established 'Tea Meetings' she and her sisters prepared quantities of their own delicious home-made beef. She was a founder and for more than twenty years Secretary of the 'Helping Hand' with its fifty-year old traditions of sociability and needlework. She was an expert knitter and sewer and maker of beautiful embroideries. Everyone will recall the garden-party aspect of her green lawns filled with relatives and friends, old and young and very young.

Mary Dewees was the last surviving member of old Radnor Monthly Meeting before it joined Twelfth Street Meeting in 1865.
