He was born Feb. 6, 1936, in Jefferson County, the son of Albert Otto and Helen Martha Bruce Bell. He was a 1954 graduate of Saluda High School where he played basketball. He was awarded a full basketball scholarship to the University of Kentucky. He was unable to take the scholarship due to joining the Navy. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He was employed for 38 years as a machinist with Cummins-Holset in Madison and Columbus. After retirement he worked at Ace Hardware and Kernen's Hardware. He was a member of the Madison First Assembly of God Church where he served as a deacon. He also enjoyed UK basketball, the Boston Celtics, bowling, reading, crossword puzzles, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Anna Pettit Bell of Madison, whom he married on Dec. 25, 1964; his daughter, Shannon Steveley of Madison; one grandson; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Martha Bruce Bell, who died Oct. 11, 1980; his father, Albert Otto Bell, who died June 1, 1988; his son, Ricky Beard, who died on Feb. 7, 2004; his sister, Chrystal Bell; his brothers, Albert Otto Bell Jr., Ronald Bell, Jerry Bell and Bruce Allen Bell.
A memorial service was at Morgan and Nay Funeral Centre. Burial was at New Bethel Cemetery near Chelsea.
