d/o Perry Abel
Margaret Adaline Abel was a member of the side saddle cavalry that called themselves the Rhea County Spartans. A all female military unit of about 100 young women headed by Mary Elizabeth McDonald that was the only female unit of the Civil War. They were known for riding to local camps to bring supplies where some of the females had fathers or brothers or beau's who were serving in the Confederate Army, however when the Union soldiers entered the area the Spartans became so much more than a supply means, since the Union soldiers wouldn't suspect females as listening in and taking back info to the Confederate Army they were free speaking in stores and other areas of town... the women in return became spies for their fellow units by taking back not only supplies but info they may have overheard from the Union Soldiers...
