Jacob B. Ross was Born 2 Apr 1815, Stonycreek Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania, son of Jacob and Hannah Peterson Ross, and great-grandson of George Ross Jr. according to most family trees.
Said to be the great-grandson of George Ross, Signer of the Declaration of Independence.

One family tree says he was born at Stoystown, Somerset Coutny. Some say he died at Beaver City, Beaver County.
He died 1871 at Industry, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. His widow Mary S. (Boyd) Ross afterwards went to live in Chicago with her daughter Matilda, Mrs. James Beach Clow.

Descendants said buried Oak Grove Cemetery, Industry, PA. (unconfirmed).

The Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy (1925), by Virkus, Volume 1, p.556, states that his daughter Matilda Ross Clow was a descendant of "George Ross, a signer."
This was George Ross Jr (May 10, 1730 – July 14, 1779), signer of the Continental Association and the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Pennsylvania, and also uncle of the man who married Betsy Griscom in 1773 (the famous "Betsy Ross") (see Find A Grave Memorial# 2775).

Several family trees online (not verified by me) show Jacob B. Ross as the son of Jacob Ross Sr., the son of George Ross Jr. and Mary (Bird/Byrd) Ross; grandson of George Ross (1730-1779) the Signer and Ann (Lawler) Ross.

The Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy: First Families of America (1925), by Virkus, Volume 1, p.556:

5-James Beach, served in War of 1812;
4-Samuel Culbertson, m. Sophia Hull Lusk;
3-James Beach (1832-1908), capt. Civil War, m Matilda Ross (1836-1808 sic); desc. of George Ross, a "signer").
2-son of William Ellsworth Clow (b 1860)...
1-William Ellsworth Clow Jr.

From Jean Masco, 4/16/2018: "My line is from James ROSS ant 1724-1801 of Stonycreek Two, Somerset Co, PA through his second son, Adam. Jacob was Adam's brother."
Jacob and Elizabeth were younger children of James and Susannah (Hite?) Ross and were minors at the time of James' death. "I suspect James' wife Susannah was a second or third wife because of the gaps in the ages of the children. … The guardian for Jacob and Elizabeth was named as Conrad HITE.
"There is no evidence I have found to indicate they are descendants of George ROSS, the Signer. George's son James died at a different time and place from our James. A ROSS male cousin's YDna revealed no link. Such a disappointment. The Noah CLARK who was married to Adam's sister Crissie Ann was also not a descendant of Abraham CLARK, although Noah did serve in the Revolution."
