OBITUARY:
"Ruby C. Nelson, age 82, of Overland Park, Kansas, formerly of Harcourt, Iowa, passed away Sunday, August 31, 2003 at her home in Overland Park following a brief illness.
Ruby Christine Danielson was born March 23, 1921, in Dayton, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Johanna (Hansen) Danielson. She was baptized on May 1, 1921, and also received the rite of confirmation at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Dayton. Ruby attended the Dayton Schools, graduating from the Dayton High School in 1939. On December 29, 1946, she was united in marriage to Lloyd D. Nelson of Harcourt at Emanuel Lutheran. To this union four children were born...
Lloyd and Ruby lived their entire married life in Harcourt. They started their marriage in an apartment which adjoined a building known to family members as the "Bee House" because of the honey that was produced there [by brother-in-law Kenny Nelson].
A favorite story for Ruby to recall was the building of their family home by family and friends by tearing down the parsonage in Dayton and using the materials to build their new home in Harcourt. Ruby was a homemaker and mother who later began working in the Harcout Savings Bank for many years...
During her years in Harcourt she was a member of Faith Lutheran Church taking part as Sunday School teacher, singing in the choir, assistant church organist, women groups and all church related activites. Lloyd and Ruby were active in all Harcourt community functions, Harcourt Appreciation Day being a notable one.
She loved to sing and for many years sang at local weddings and funerals. Music continued to be important to her by giving many piano lessons in her home after retiring.
It was during retirement that the interest of quilting returned to her to become a big part of her life. Her present interests include her membership and activities at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Overland Park, the Tuesday night quilt group hosted in her home, anmd weekly quilting with the Legler Barn Quilters of Lenexa, Kansas. Coffee was a staple in her home, treats, meals, and shared baked goods were always available along with handmade gifts.
Her Scandinavian heritage was important to her. She would never pass up the opportunity to visit with family or friends, go for a ride, attend grandchildren and social events or just stay busy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lloyd on February 11, 1989; infant daughter Barbara; sister Ruth Sandeen; and brothers Lester and Edgar."
