Abraham A. Bevier and his Mariche Freer came from New Paltz, Ulster Co. to Chenango Co. due to talk of the Erie Canal and tributary canals that were proposed to open the interior of New York State. They purchased land and built houses for each of their five surviving sons in close proximity to the route of the impending Chenango Canal. Sons Isaac and Roelof received land and houses along the West Bank of the Chenango River.

Sons Thomas, Abraham and Zachariah received land and houses on the East side of the Chenango River in what is today The Village of Port Dickinson.

Abraham A. Bevier served as one of the representatives from Broome County to the Chenango Canal Convention. This position no doubt gave him clear information as to the Chenango Canal route. That information caused him to select land for his three youngest sons on the East side of the Chenango River.
