Trained as a physician but took up the Mercantile trade. Later he was chosen as President of the Bank of Tennessee, until the Civil War. He resigned his position to enter the Confederate service as a Colonel on the staff of General Samuel R. Anderson. After the war he returned to Nashville to enter the real estate business with General Anderson and General Bushrod Johnson. He was associated with the Post Office Department during the Administration of President Franklin Pierce.
