A Liturgical Wake Service and Rosary is 5:00 pm Sunday at Holy Cross with visitation starting at 3:00 at church on Sunday. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Jake was born July 27, 1920 at Hague, ND to John and Frances (Lemer) Volk. He was raised on the family farm and attended country school. He graduated in 1939 from Hague High School where he had been active in football and basketball. He then attended a trade school in North Dakota where he studied welding and mechanics.
Jake married Frances Mitzel on December 1, 1942 in Hague. They made their first home on the Volk farmstead until 1946 when they moved to Bowdle, SD to operate the Red Owl grocery store.
In 1948 they purchased a farm west of Ipswich, SD. They farmed together, growing grains and raising livestock, until retiring in 1983 and moving into Ipswich. During his time on the farm, Jake was also active in the community. He served on the Farmer's Elevator Board of Directors for 18 years and had held several offices on the board. He was the Huntley Township clerk for many years and had served on the Edmunds County Conservation District Board. He also worked as a crop adjuster after retiring from active farming.
Even after retirement, Jake found great joy in being able to drive to the farm to look at the cattle nearly every day. In his younger years he liked to ride horses to check cattle but had more recently mastered ATV's. He would be gone for hours "just checking things out."
He loved to travel with Frances and they were fortunate to be able spend some time in the south during the winter months. Together they attended many polka dances and hosted many card games.
Frances died on April 13, 2009. Jake continued to live in his home in Ipswich and even took up caring for all of Frances' beautiful flower beds.
Jake was a friend to many and enjoyed visiting with the guys. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, watching sports on television, especially baseball, and loved to get out and drive. He loved to keep up on his grandchildren's lives and those of his family. He most enjoyed family gatherings that included German food and especially noodle and sauerkraut.
Jake died Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab. He will be remembered in the hearts of his children; Jerry (Deborah) Volk of Buckeye, AZ, Jim (Leanne) Volk of EL Paso, TX, Sharon (Norbert) Fuhrmann of Aberdeen, Kenneth (Gwen) Volk of Marshall, TX, Mary (Bill) Spangler, of Castle Rock, CO, Mark (Mary Ann) Volk of Ipswich, and Kathy (Tom) Larson of Aberdeen; one sister, Phil Johnson of Lodi, CA; twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Frances; son, John Frances; grandchildren, Rick Fuhrmann and Rebecca Schiering; great-grandson, Phillip Schiering; brother, Roy; sisters, Ann, Liz, Frances and Antonia.
