John was born in Louisa County on May 28, 1939 to the late Phillip and Mary Poindexter Banks.
He confessed Christ as his personal Savior and joined Oak Grove Baptist Church at an early age. After the completion of his secondary education, he served in the United States Army.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Wilson-Banks.
To this union there were two stepdaughters, Yolanda and Tonya Wilson, both of Washington, D.C.; and a son, Ollie Banks of Richmond, Virginia. He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted friend Ruth of Charlottesville, Virginia; loving sister, Elsie Arnette and husband, William Ray, of Louisa, Virginia; caring brothers James Banks of Lusby, Maryland, Donald Harris of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Russell Banks and wife, Doris, of King George, Virginia; four treasured grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom were blessed to know him.
John loved laughing and being with his family and friends. He touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity, and maintained his trademark sense of humor all the way to the end.
Friends and family are invited to attend funeral services 1 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2011, at Thomasson Watson Funeral Chapel, 117 West Street, Louisa, VA 23093. Burial with military honors will follow at the Bright Hope Baptist Cemetery.
